The development of the ependymal cells of the domestic fowl was studied on the membrane structure. In the 6-day embryo, the adjacent cell membranes contacted one another in the adluminal region. In the freeze-fracture replica, the belt-like elevations on the P face and the shallow grooves on the E face can be recognized in the corresponding area, but the tight junctional particles are absent on both faces of the 6-day embryo. Some discrete rows of the tight junctions are found in the 12-day embryo. These tight junctions are poorly developed in the adult ependymal cells. Gap junctions between the cells of the 6-day embryo are small in size while larger ones are found after 12 days of incubation. A belt-like distribution of the intramembranous particles (10 nm in diameter) in the corresponding area of the intermediate junction is found in the 10-day embryo and more advanced stages. The square aggregations of the intramembranous particles appear in the non-junctional area of the cell membrane in the 8-day embryo and later stages. The cilia appear in some cells of the 13-day embryo. The ciliated cells account for about 35% of all ependymal cells of the adult lateral ventricle.
