Detection of reaction positive cells were examined by two histochemical methods, the tyrosinase reaction and dopa reaction, on the skin of non-melanized goldfish, which were kept in diluted sea water (dil. s. w.) for 5 days. Untreated intact fishes were used as control materials. Experiments followed the methods of TOGASHI (1957) for the tyrosinase reaction and FURUYA and IKEDA (1971) for the dopa reaction. Large dendritic cells were detected in the end region of the caudal fin in the fishes treated with dil. s. w. for both reactions. They may be precursor cells, just before melanization. Besides these dendritic cells there were thin, small dopa reaction positive cells. They were probably ameboid cells, which were found in the process of melanized cell formation in in vitro culture of goldfish skin (KIKUCHI, 1980). In the intact fish, the tyrosinase reaction positive cell was not found at all. In the dopa reaction, however, small reaction positive cells were detected in all areas of the skin of dil. s. w. treated and intact fishes, which were all non-melanized goldfish. Studies must still be performed in order to identify the type of these small cells.
