The microdistribution of Drosophila melanogaster and its sibling species, D. simulans, was surveyed in the vicinity of buildings in the Bonin Islands, Japan. D. melanogaster was abundant inside and immediately outside the building, while D. simulans avoided entering the buildings. These findings agree with studies reported earlier from other parts of the world. The distribution of D. simulans seems to be explained by its preference for light, but that of D. melanogaster suggests the involvement of some other type of behavior. An observed distortion of sex ratio is also discussed in comparison with earlier works. With respect to preferences for three kinds of fruit which were used as bait, the two species were different : bananas were more attractive to D. simulans than oranges, while the reverse was the case with D. melanogaster. Pineapple was equally favored by the two species. Food preferences, however, seemed to have little effect on the gross distribution pattern of the species.
