When a strong light was applied, Paramecium bursaria always showed negative phototaxis. During such a phenomenon, diurnal rhythms did not appear but dark-accumulation was observed all day. Negative phototaxis was found to be caused by both changes in swimming velocity and ciliary reversal. That is to say, paramecia swam rapidly under strong light (10^5 lux) but stopped swimming under dark conditions (500 lux). The ciliary reversal occurred within 1 sec after a sudden increase in light intensity. Moreover, Chlorella-free paramecia showed these two types of photoresponse as well as normal ones. The present result strongly suggests that negaive phototaxis of P. bursaria is not attributed to its symbiotic Chlorella.
