Development and Shedding of Teeth on Jaw Bonnes in Adult Smelt,Hypomesus transpacificus nipponensis(短報)

Sixty three immature smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus nipponensis, were collected from the Shari River in October, and 47 female and 58 male fully matured smelt were collected from Lake Abashiri in January. All specimens were stained with alizarin red S. The position of toothgerms, functional teeth and traces of lost teeth in the tooth row on the dentary and pre-maxillary were determined in these stained specimens. When the functional teeth disappeared at the nthtooth position, the frequency of appearance of toothgerms at the (n-1)th was significantly lower than that at the (n-2)th, and the frequency at the (n+1)th-tooth position was significantly higher than that at(n+2)th on the dentary and premaxillary. Furthermore, when the teeth were shed at the nth tooth position on the dentary and pre maxillary, there were no significant differences in the frequencies of the next trace of lost teeth among the (n+1)th, (n+2)th, (n+3)th and (n+4)th-tooth position in the about smelt. These results suggest that the shedding of functional teeth produces a condition which stimulates the development of the teeth just posterior to them and inhibits the tooth just anterior to them from developing, and it does not always produce a condition which inhibits the shedding of the functioning teeth around them.
