Little is known about the mechanisms of entertainment of the activity rhythms of Drosophila. D. melanogaster shows two peaks of activity at dusk and dawn under a natural lightdark cycle, LD 12:12. In continuous darkness (DD), they keep the time course which they established before the onset of DD. D. melanogaster were entrained at low temperatures which immobilized the flies and the temperature was raised after the onset of continuous darkness. Without the experience of activity under LD cycles, they became active at their subjective dawn in darkness. The LD cue seemed to be sufficient enough to entrain activity to circadian rhythm.
