Formation of the vitelline envelope and chorion in the eggs of the porgy, Pagras major, was investigated with a scanning and transmission electron microscope. The formation of the vitelline envelope started when the oocyte reachsd 150 μm in diameter. The outer layer of the chorion was formed initially, followed by the inner later. In the final process of chorion formation, the inner layer developed into circular strata. On the surface of the chorion of the mature egg, numerous small pits were observed. It was clearly shown that the pits were vestiges of the interspaces (tiny gaps) between the microvilli which appeared at early stage of the vitelline envelope forma-tion. The structural material of inner layer of the chorion was presumed to originate from the oocyte.
