The intestinal wall of the medaka, Oryzias latipes, was studied by light and electron microscopy with special reference to the neurosecretory axons. The paraldehyde-fuchsin (AF)-positive materials were found in the inner circular muscle layer and the space between smooth muscle layers. An axon abundant with electron-dense granules was found on the intestinal wall by electron microscopy. The shape of the granules was either round or oval, and the diameter varied from 80 to 140 nm. Axons were classified into three types according to the diameters of their granules. The axons innervated into the plexus myentericus among the inner circular muscle cells and in the submucosa. They often formed varicosities, which were regarded to play a role in the storage and release of a neurosecretory substance.
