Humoral control of ecdysteroid accumulation in the ovary of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, was studies by using preparations without retrocerebral endocrine organs. Ecdysteroids accumulated in the ovaries of the pupae, whose brains had been exstirpated shortly after pupal ecdysis. Accumulation was also observed in ovaries transplanted from the early fourth instar larvae into isolated pupal abdomens. In Bombyx mori, growth of the ovary may be stimulated by the prothoracic gland hormone and synthesis and accumulation of ovarian ecdysteroids may begin autonomously when the ovary attains a certain stage of development.
