The chemical constituents, pH and osmolarity of bullfrog plasma (Ranacatesbiana) were measured. Based upon the results of these measurements, the composition of a saline solution for physiological experiments on the bullfrog retina was proposed. After more than two hours in this saline solution, it was found that the amplitude of electrical response (ERG) of bullfrog isolated retina was not significantly diminished. The ERG amplitude decreased in a bicarbonate-free saline solution. It was suggested that bicarbonate is an important constituent for the maintenance of electrical activity in bullfrog retina.
