Ultrastructural examination of the midgut epithelium of Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe) has shown the presence of phagocytic cell between the regularly arranged regenerative crypts. The phagocytic cell includes a cell fragment derived from the midgut epithelial cell which is in the process of autolysis. Localization of strong acid phosphatase activity in the inclusion is indicated by an ultracytochemistry. The membrane covering the inclusion was not stained by ruthenium red. These results show that the inclusion is a phagosome.
