Addition of Chlorella powder to the hitherto available artificial diet Samia cynthia ricini greatly improved its growth. The combined use of No. 3 and No. 5 diets (No. 3 for the first to fourth instars and No. 5 for the fifth instar), the composition of which is shown in Table 1, is appraised as the best and most economic formula. Larvae thus reared showed a rapid and uniform growth comparable to growth on the fresh leaves of Ailanthus altissima, with normal rhythms in larval ecdysis and gut purge timings.
