Effects of ovariectomy and steroid hormone implantation on blood gonadotropin (GtH) levels were examined in sexually mature female goldfish. Ovariectomized fish had significantly higher levels of GtH than intact and sham-operated fish from two to ten weeks post-surgery. Ovariectomized fish implanted with testosterone or estradiol capsules which provided physiological blood steroid levels had lower GtH levels than fish implanted with empty capsules. Pituitary GtH content was not affected by ovariectomy and steroid implantation. This and an earlier study show that female goldfish have both positive and negative steroid feedback systems for GtH release which are considered to regulate cyclic (ovulatory surge) and tonic (basal secretion) GtH secretion, respectively.
