In this paper we propose an architecture for baseband processing of an improved modulation scheme based on 64 star-QAM (DAPSK). A set of uniformly-distributed signal constellation is proposed for the new modulation. The proposed transmitter consists mainly of an amplitude and differential phase encoder with a symbol-to-I/Q mapping block, whereas the receiver includes an interpolation-based timing recovery block, a rectangular-to-polar coordinate transform block, a previous-signal estimator, and a decision block. Since non-coherent detection is adopted, no carrier recovery is required. Simulation results of the proposed architecture indicate that comparable performance as conventional QAM can be achieved. We expected that this new modulation scheme together with its architecture constitute a solid foundation for low-complexity, hiqh-spectral-efficiency data communication systems.
