Conventional approach for frequency estimation usually assume a single complex tone without data modulation. In many applications such an assumption, realized by using either a separate pilot beacon or synchronization preamble is not feasible. This paper deals with phase-modulated carriers in the absence of timing information and known data pattern. We introduce a new frequency acquisition scheme that is based maximum likelihood principle. This scheme provides us not only a frequency offset estimate but also timing information. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm yields performance superior to that of the noncoherent combining scheme if the matched filter output rate is properly selected.
