In this paper, a video coding algorithm for the effective transmission and storage of stereoscopic video signals is presented. To obtain high visual quality and coding efficiency, the coder is designed to utilize the characteristics of human visual system. The spatial correlation inherent in the stereo pair is utilized by the disparity estimation. Temporal redundancy among the left and right views of the video pair is removed by the motion-compensated prediction or the combined motion- and disparity-compensated prediction. The just noticeable distortion (JND) profile of the stereoscopic video frame is then obtained to evaluate the visual significance of the signal to be encoded. To preserve good stereoscopic visual effect, the error visibility threshold of the JND profile is modified by the stereo-relevant signals. The block of perceptually important prediction error signal is selected for further encoding. Simulation results show that acceptable visual quality can be obtained at an average bit rate of 0.3bpp with PSNR and PSPNR equal to 33.10dB and 36.84dB, respectively.
