Since Mandelbrot proposed the fundamental theory of fractal, it has received considerable attention of researchers in many areas, including image compression. Jacquin is the first one who has successfully used it in real world image encoding. Because its performance in bit rate and decoding image quality is as well as many traditional method, such as VQ and DCT, it is regarded as a potential image coding scheme. The traditional approach to compress color images by fractal is to decompose the image into either R-G-B or Y-I-Q components and compress them respectivily. In this paper, by taking the advantage of high correlation between each component of an color image, a more efficient fractal compression method for color images based on vectors is firstly investigated. From the simulation result we will realize that lower bit rate can be achieved without any hurt of decoding image quality.
