Design of a Video Interface Controller for Color Sequential Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplay

A video interface controller has been developed for a XGA liquid-crystal-on-silicon reflective microdisplay system. The controller consists of a video digitizer, a logic interface and gamma correction references. The video digitizer converts the analog RGB signals to digital ones with three high speed ADCs. An internal Phase-lock-loop recovers the timings for synchronization. The gamma correction references are generated with a DAC for fine-tuning of gray scales. The logic interface, implemented with an Altera complex programmable logic device for design flexibility and fast prototyping, configures the video digitizer and the DAC, and also delivers the video data and synchronization signals to the microdisplay. Based on the video interface controller, a XGA sequential color video microdisplay system was achieved with vivid images.
