Cathode ray tube(CRT)display and Liquid crystal display(LCD)were compared for their difference on visual performance by experiment. Results indicate that the human eye's ability of discrimination for lighter colors on LCD was better than on CRT, however, it was worse on LCD than on CRT for darker colors. In addition, detection time of identification on LCD was significant less than on CRT. Results also indicate that the sensitivity of human eye for the variation of three parameters of HLS color model was different, that is, the eye was more sensitive for lightness and hue than for saturation. Generally, when the absolute value of the normalized contrast of foreground color and background color is comparative large, the visual perfomance will be better on LCD as well as on CRT. Increasing the difference of saturation between foreground color and background color can improve visual performance of display units.
