The sustaining operation stability as terms of a panel design and driving conditions have been studied. The panel design, which has been adopted in this study, has three different discharge gaps between X electrode and Y electrode with a same transparent electrode width and four different transparent electrode width with a same discharge gap. To evaluate the sustaining operation stability, the static operating margin has been measured during Ike sustaining operation. When the firsl turn off voltage Vs1 is comparatively high, its condition could be regarded as an unstable operation. On the contrary if the first turn off voltage Vs1 is sufficiently low, its condition could be regarded as a stable operating condition. It is found that the sustaining operation stability is strongly depending on the panel design such as discharge gaps as well as driving frequencies and pulse width of sustaining pulse. The short discharge gap has more stability, than longer one due lo the fast response time. Also, narrow transparent electrode width is more stable than wilder one due lo strong electric field distribution in central area of discharge gap. Moreover, the longer pulse width is more stable than shorter one due to the stable wall charge formation. As a minor factor, the driving frequency plays a factor of sustaining operation stability. When the higher frequency is applied, the high density, of priming particles are formed in a gas space and facilitate the next sustaining discharge.
