Truly Bistable-Twisted-Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays with Infinite Lifetimes

Conventional bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays where the two twist states differ by 360° are not really stable. We report here a study of permanently bistable twisted nematic displays where the two twist states differ by 180°. These twist states have an infinite lifetime and are truly bistable. Switching between the two bistable twist states is studied as well. A working device is demonstrated.
