Small elastic constants and large Δε LC substances need to develop the low driving voltage LCD. The phenomenological and theoretical calculation can be applied to develop large Δε LC substances. It is very important to reduce the ion density of LC cell for good reliability LCD that is characterized with small residual DC and high voltage holding ratio. It has been found that the coexistence of large Δε and good reliability are possible by the screening of LC substances. Non-polr substances featuring small γ_1 and low Δn also have been developed, and they can be applied for not only TN but also for IPS and VA modes.
