A METHOD FOR ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF EFFICIENCY-BANDWIDTH PRODUCT OF A SMALL DIELECTRIC LOADED ANTENNA

The authors have evaluated dielectric loaded small dipole antennas with products of efficiency and fractional bandwidth. The efficiency-bandwidth product(EB)is expressed with a ratio of radiation resistance over input reactance of an antenna. Measurement of input impedance of such an electrically small antenna, however, is difficult by using a network analyzer because one needs to measure the small resistance of the antenna under much of uncertainty like residual systematic or drift errors. Matching the antennas to the transmission line with a stub tuner can considerably reduce the uncertainty of the reflection measurement. The Wheeler cap method can measure the radiation resistance of antennas also with small errors. In this report an accurate measurement method for the EB of matched antennas is presented using the Wheeler cap. In addition, an FDTD simulation for the procedure of the Wheeler cap method is also considered.
