• The antenna characteristics of a portable telephone are influenced by antenna configuration, housing construction, and the presence of the human body. This paper analytically studies the antenna loss factors of a real portable telephone. They are categorized to antenna loss (efficiency), imperfect metal housing loss and a human hand and head loss. All are estimated by the FDTD method using a simple real telephone and a human body model. It is found that the longer monopole antenna, 3/8λ type, provides rather high gain, and that an actual portable telephone has losses of about 1〜2dB without the human body loss.
