A numerical technique for analyzing arbitrarily shaped microstrip patch antenna is presented. The presented technique uses the Mixed Potential Integral Equation (MPIE) in conjunction with the finite element method to analyze the surface current density on the patch. In the process of finite element method, the use of a set of vector basis functions where the unknown parameters are associated with the edges of triangular element is proposed for representing the unknown surface current density in MPIE. The main feature of the vector basis functions is the preservation of the continuity of the normal component of the surface current density at the boundary of each element. In order to demonstrate the validation of the presented numerical technique, numerical results of input impedance, resonance frequency, and radiation patterns for a rectangular patch fed by coaxial probe are computed and are compared with other published computational data.
