• Latest wireless communications intended to provide multimedia services in Japan are presented. A 32 kb/s digital bearer service by PHS is highlighted which has just started in Japan. ATM wireless access, AWA, is described including system concept and an example of network design. It will provide about 10 Mb/s capacity to individual users. Asymmetrical access using the geostationary satellite N-STAR is also introduced. This system utilizes a high speed satellite link for the return stream and terrestrial internet/public line access for the forward stream. These systems will create flexible networks that provide various multimedia communication services.
