Corticofugal feedback to the thalamus has been speculated to perform a gating or gain control function in the transmission of information from the peripheral to the cortex. In the visual system, the feedback is thought to be involved in selective, location-based and feature-based attention. By cooling the primary auditory cortex (AI), Villa et al. found that the majority of neurons in the medial geniculate body (MGB) showed decreasing spontaneous firing rate. The corticofugal modulation led to the appearance or disappearance of the best frequency of tuning for many neurons in the ventral nucleus (MGv) of MGB. They speculated that the corticothalamic projection may be the support for selective operation in filtering the acoustic signal in the thalamic level. We examined the cortical modulation on neurons in the MGv. AI was regionally activated by electrical stimulation at 50 to 100ms before sound stimulus. Responses of MGB neurons to pure-tones and noise-bursts were compared before and during AI activation.
