The anomalies of optical diffraction gratings have been of interest since they were discovered by Wood in 1902. In 1965, Hessel and Oliner provided a good historical summary of this research. Furthermore, they pointed out that there are basically two types of anomalous effect. First, there is the Raleigh type due to one of the spectral orders appearing at the grazing angle. Second, there is the resonance type due to possible"guided complex waves supportable by the grating. "In this paper, the resonance properties of the diffraction gratings are considered based on modal expansion theory by almost periodic functions for dielectric gratings.
