Several types of wide-band Ti:LiNbO_3 modulators are reported, with typical microwave attenuation values (α_0)^3, of 0.43 to 0.75 dB/[cm(GHz)^<1/2>] There is a further need for the development of modulators, capable of operating at more than 20 Gb/s, with low driving voltages, of the order of, 3 V,inoder to realize the practical high-speed optical communication systems. We found that the striplime conductor loss and the loss due to mounting package are limiting factors, in decreasing further, the microwave attenuation. In this paper, we propose and discuss the results of a novel CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) electrode structure with a very low microwave attenuation.
