Many man-made materials have well defined geometry and properties and are called the "deterministic" media. In contrast, natural and biological media are often varying randomly in time and space and are called the "random" media. This paper gives an introduction to theories of wave propagation in such a medium and presents examples of applications in the fields of medical optics, ultrasound imaging and remote-sensing of geophysical medium including the effects of random medium on radar, SAR, lidar, and detection and imaging of objects. It includes some historical highlights and most recent new development. It is also pointed out that the field of waves in random media is one of the most challenging theoretical problems today and will continue to challenge theoreticians and mathematicians as well as engineers in the new millennium.
