We developed and evaluated a memory-coupled scalable architecture (MESCAR), which reduces software overhead and achives high-speed inter- and intra-node communication with network-wide distributed shared memory. A distributed memory coupler (DMC) is the main part of MESCAR, which uses ATM156M as an example of the lower layer. Using pipelined processing, which accesses memory in parallel with cell transfer, cell-based CRC, bus separation, and other effective solutions, DMC achieves138 throughput of Mb/s (3.08 μs/cell) and latency including software of 12.3 μs for a 40-B message despite using economical general-purpose devices. MESCAR is appropriate for communicating node-control-information in networks.
