Coarce polishing process of the ferrules for single-mode connection were theoretically studied on the basis of the elastic and non-elastic contact theories. Plastic ferrules showed one-order larger polishing rates than those of conventional zirconia ferrules. The differences of the polishing rates between plastic and zirconia ferrules could be well explained by using proposed theorectical model. Furthermore, endface parameter ranges allowable for stable PC (Physical Contact) connection of plastic ferrules were wider than those of zirconia ferrules. To be realized allowable endface parameters, the Advanced PC (AdPC) polishing conditions were determined for SC-type plastic fermles. The plastic ferrules, whose endfaces were polished using the AdPC polishing technique, exhibited good optical characteristics.
