This paper proposes a novel method for designing linear predictors suitable for lossless image coding. Since MMSE predictors which are optimized based on the MSE criterion do not necessarily minimize a coding rate, our method designs a predictor for each image so that the amount of information on prediction errors can have a minimum. Moreover to introduce block-based adaptive prediction, we extend the method to the one which can optimize multiple predictors simultaneously. Simulation results indicate that the lossless coding scheme using these predictors is superior to the conventional scheme which utilizes the MMSE predictors, and that an average coding rate of the proposed coding scheme is about 0.37 bits/pel lower than that of the JPEG-LS.
