The Hamiltonian algorithm is applied to an optimization of the reactances in electronically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) antennas. This approach finds the optimal solution by tracing the locus of a virtual particle in a Hamiltonian system that corresponds to the optimization problem. Compared to conventional random-search techniques such as the Monte Carlo method, this method offers 5 times calculation speed in obtaining the optimal reactances and the equivalent maximal gain for the 4-reactance antenna. An 8-reactance antenna also receives the benefit of 0.2 dB larger maximal gain and 10 times calculation speed.
