An adaptive array antenna can form a desired antenna pattern and adaptively control it ifan appropriate set of antenna weights is provided and updated in software. Researchers in a field of signal processing believe that it can be a useful tool for adaptive beamforming and nullsteering that is a new researching issue in signal proeessing in space (angular space) and time domains. In wireless communications, adaptive arrays can be considered as a breakthrough technology so that capacity of mobile radio communication system can be improved significantly because intersymbol and multiuser interference can be reduced by beam-space filtering. In these years, a largest highlight in R&D of adaptive arrays must be applications to the third generation mobile radio communieation system, i.e. IMT-2000, broadband wireless LAN, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and mobile satelite communieation systems. This special issue was planned to cover some of excellent papers in a wide range of subjects in R&D of adaptive array antennas timely. It contains two invited papers, 16 regular papers, and one letter which were selected by very strict review. One of the invited papers overviews the history and trends of R&D in adaptive antenna technologies in Japan. Another is invited to introduce some latest results of a leading researcher in a field of space-time signal proeessing in USA. I hope this special issue will be a good reference for readers and would like to express my appreciation to the authors and the reviewers, beceause this issue was published under a tight schedule in order to involve timely subjects. I also would like to thank all the members of this issue's editorial committee, Ryu Miura, Yukihiro Kamiya, Takashi Inoue, Takeo Ohgane, Takashi Ohira, Nobuyoshi Kikuma, Mamoru Sawahashi, Hiroki Shoki, Jun-ichi Takada, Isamu Chiba, Keizo Cho, Hiroyuki Tsuji, and Mitoshi Fujimoto. The cooperation of the Editorial Board of IEICE Transactions and the publication staff are greatly appreciated.
