• The impact of finite intermediate frequency (IF) on the sensitivity of heterodyne ASK lightwave receivers is examined and quantified. It is shown that certain choices of IF (f_<IF>T=α_<opt>, 3α_<opt>/2,2α_<opt>, etc.) yield the same performance as infinite f_<IF> where α_<opt> is the optimum IF filter bandwidth when f_<IF> = ∞. The approximate results presented in this paper are within 0.4 dB of exact results.
