A new configuration is proposed for an optoelectronic network (OEN) using microwave frequency mixing and multiplexing. The m×n OEN consists of m optical sources, m-parallel n-stage cascaded optical intensity modulators, and m photodetectors. The m×n OEN matrix is theoretically discussed, and l×2, 2×2 and 3×3 OENs are analyzed in detail. The 2×2 OEN, which mixes and multiplexes microwaves, is further investigated and the theoretical prediction derived from OEN equations is experimentally confirmed.
