Spread spectrum technology was first developed for military use during War II and the early Cold War. Due to traditional spectrum policies, it remained implicitly forbidden for commercial use throughout the world until a 1985 FCC decision. This paper traces the evolution of spread spectrum from a purely military technology to the basis of both Wi-Fi and CDMA cellular.
