Computer-generated characters are often seen these days on TV programs, in movies and so forth. They are called "synthetic", "digital" or "virtual" actors and many of them are based on model-based computer graphics (CG). In model-based approaches, however, there is a trade-off between reality and model complexity. On the other hand, many recent studies have been made on image-based CG characterized by its visual reality. In this paper we introduce a new type of synthetic actor, which we call "2D Image-Based Synthetic Actor" in accordance with the present state of CG technology. Our new synthetic actor has a high level of visual reality and can be made much more easily than a model-based synthetic actor by using a number of images acquired by filming a real actor.
