A study on motion analysis via MPEG picture

Along with rapid progress of multimedia technology, motion picture is increasingly handled on computer these days. Accordingly the MPEG (Moving Picture Coding Experts Group) encoding format becomes a worldwide standard in processing motion picture on computer. Authors currently work on the study to process MPEG data as they are without getting them decoded. Seeking for various possibilities in using MPEG data, authors investigate a technique to use two MPEG motion pictures in a bid to three-dimensionally estimate motion vector. A target is viewed at multiple angles at a time to obtain multiple images. These images are synthesized in a three-dimensional way and locus of the synthesized image is projected onto three-dimensional coordinate system. Usefulness of this technique has been proved in our experiments.
