Intelligent TV System : Development of a Television System with Personal Computer Capability

In this paper, we describe a prototype model, called "Intelligent TV", which we developed as a new type of information appliance. "Intelligent TV" is a television system with personal computer (PC) capability. By equipping a 28inch wide-screen TV with a PC mother board, we give interactive functions to a TV set. "Intelligent TV" has the following three functions in addition to fundamental TV functions: (1) Playing CD (CD-ROM title, photo CD, audio CD, electronic book CD) (2) viewing teletext (3) browsing World Wide Web (WWW) In this prototyping, we tried to give an operation environment similar to an usual TV set to the user and tried to develop this system as a home-use appliance. However, there are two big problems with current technology. (a) Difficulty of displaying images clearly caused by differences between the displaying methods in PC and TV (non-interlace and interlace). (b) Difficult PC operations for users especially those who don't have "PC literacy". To address these problems, we have developed the following advanced features and built in to our system. (1) New scanning line conversion method to display PC images on a wide-screen TV clearly. (2) Easy user interfaces that users can operate all functions by a remote controller. The system overview and the above two features are mainly described in this paper.
