ETRI had started looking at rain effects on satellite links in the early 90's for the Koreasat design. In order to develop our own prediction method of rain attenuation on the Korean satellite links, ETRI have studied on propagation analysis including construction of beacon measurement systems since July 1997. Using the analysis of measured data, ETRI proposed conversion procedures to rain-rate distribution with one-minute integration from various integration time data, and worst month to annual rain-rate distributions. In addition, estimation methods such as rainfall duration characteristics from cumulative rain-rate distribution and effective rain path length on the satellite link are carried out at ETRI. This paper introduces regional rain-rate distributions for Korean major cities, and illustrates developing process for domestic rain attenuation modeling.
