Almost thirty years have passed since space activities took place, in Japan. The activities include the space transportation systems such as N-rocket series, H-I/H-II rocket series and H-IIA series development, the earth observation satellite systems and the satellite broadcasting and communication systems development. Especially for both the broadcasting and communication systems, Japan started the Direct Broadcasting Satellite system in 1978 using BS (Yuri), and the Ka-band satellite communication system in 1977 using CS (Sakura). These services are the first service in the world. This paper summarizes the space activities, especially for the satellite communications systems,in Japan, and surveys the future technologies in this area.
