Performance Evaluation of Broadcast Streaming Protocols over 3G Mobile Networks

We have designed and prototyped broadcast streaming protocols for 3G and future mobile networks. The protocols consider compatibility with 3GPP-PSS (packet-switched streaming service) standard and applicability to unidirectional radio channels. In this paper, we measure the protocol performance in terms of video quality and waiting time for video playback through a W-CDMA radio channel emulator and header compression nodes. From the experimental results, we show 1) trade-off relation between video quality and waiting time, 2) advantage and disadvantage of header compression, and 3) effectiveness of synchronized transmission of SDP, SMIL, and I-frames of video objects.
