Since Source Specific Multicast eases complexity of multicast tree construction, it is expected to encourage IP multicast service However, if there are non-multicast equipped routers, multicast tree construction becomes very difficult, because tunneling is required between multicast routers. In this paper, we propose Unicast extension Multicast Protocol (UMP) to solve the problem. UMP enables construction of a multicast tree using tunneling automatically established between UMP equipped routers, even if an intermediate router does not implement UMP. Moreover, UMP can handle source and receiver mobility efficiently, without causing problems with redundant path.
