In a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system, the optimum weight vector of an adaptive antenna array is the principal eigenvector (eigenvector corresponding to the maximum eigenvalue) of the covariance matrix of the received signal at the output of the despreader [1, 2]. Consequently the weight vector can be computed by solving a Generalized Eigenvalue problem (GE) [1, 5, 6]. In this paper we develop a new adaptive algorithm to solve the GE and simplify the algorithm further with low complexity burden. The computational complexity of the proposed simplified algorithm is linear with the number of antenna elements. We employ a Beamformer-Rake [1,2] receiver at the uplink of a Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) [5, 6] system to test the performance of the adaptive algorithm in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in multipath environment.
