Wind Turbine Driven Three-Phase Self-Excited Induction Generator with Static VAR Compensator and Its Performance Evaluations

This paper presents the nodal admittance approach steady-state analysis and operating performance evaluations of the three-phase Self-Excited Induction Generator (SEIG) driven by Variable-Speed Prime Movers (VSPMs) ; the wind turbine. The main features of the present algorithm of the steady-state operating analysis of the three-phase SEIG are that the VSPM characteristics included in the approximate electro-mechanical equivalent circuit of the three-phase SEIG and its operating performances in unregulated voltage control loop are then evaluated and discussed on line under the conditions of the speed changes of the VSPM and the electrical passive load power variations with the simple theoretical analysis and computation processing procedures. A three-phase SEIG prototype setup with a VSPM is also concretely implemented for small-scale clean renewable energy utilizations. The experimental operating performance results give good agreements with the simulation ones. In addition, a PI controlled feedback closed-loop voltage regulation scheme of the three-phase SEIG driven by the VSPM on the basis of the Static VAR Compensator (SVC) composed of the Thyristor Phase Controlled Reactor (TCR) in parallel with the Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC) and the Fixed Excitation Capacitor bank (FC) is designed and discussed herein for the promising stand-alone power conditioner. The simulation and experimental results prove the effectiveness and validity of the proposed SVC controlled by the PI controller in terms of fast response and high performances of the three-phase SEIG driven by the VSPM.
