The interaction between the current trends of Japanese lifestyles and the environment was analyzed. The results were as follows: The family size was seen to be decreasing, making the consumer unit smaller in what is called individualization of the consumer. The individual consumer unit implies a high level consumption lifestyle, and this is one of the special characteristics of urban lifestyles. In urban life, human relationships are scarcer in the community. Moreover, when the lifestyle was studied in a 24-h cycle, men's paid working hours were seen to be increasing, along with women's unpaid hours, and the sexual division of labor was seen to be becoming further entrenched. We must take into consideration the totality of life, not just the material environment but the human environment as well, in solving environmental problems.
