Regenerative medicine is believed to create a new industrial field of vast potential in the near future. Although Japan has achieved a high level of research in this field, it has fallen behind in industrializing the results. The collaboration of industry, academe, and government under clear, strategic vision will not only allow us to catch up the delay, but it will also open a way to broaden our research and business activities worldwide. Founded in industry-academe collaboration, Japan Tissue Engineering Co., Ltd. (J-TEC),is the first tissue-engineering-based company in Japan and develops medical products that use human cells and tissues. This report, through describing the history and experiences of J-TEC, illustrates the current situation, challenges, and actions being taken in the tissue engineering field. The most important point in this kind of business is to secure safety, quality, and social acceptance. Sound development requires a technology transfer system that facilitates smooth communication between academe and enterprises, as well as each enterprise's fulfillment of its ethical responsibility and accountability.
