We previously established a seizure-sensitive strain of gerbil named MGS/Idr in which seizure-inducible stimuli often induce repetitive backward movements of the ears (RBME) at the beginning of their epileptic seizures. As an area of the somatosensory cortex might be related to this type of RBME, we treated this area with bicuculline, an antagonist of the GABA_A receptor, to find the effect of blocking the inhibitory system of this area. Treatment of one side elicited similar RBME spontaneously on the opposite side, but lasted much longer than RBME induced by seizure-inducible stimuli. We searched for sites in which c-fos immunoreactive nuclei (CFIN) appeared on one side. At 4 hours after the treatment, CFIN appeared on one side in limited areas of the thalamus: the reticular thalamic nucleus, medial and lateral subdivisions of the ventroposterior nucleus and posterior nucleus. One gerbil whose movements stopped within 4 hrs had fewer CFIN. These results suggest that coordination of the somatosensory cortex and thalamus may participate in repetitive movements of the body as reported with the somatomotor cortex.
